Gary Zappelli & Zapp TV (1993–2002)

Gary Zappelli

Gary Zappelli is a Massachusetts media personality, independent broadcaster, and producer best known as the creator and host of Zapp TV, a controversial late-night public-access television program broadcast on TV3 Medford in Medford, Massachusetts.

Running from 1993 to 2002, Zapp TV became one of the more recognizable and unconventional programs to emerge from New England’s public-access television era. Combining political commentary, live interviews, satire, and unpredictable late-night broadcasting, the show developed a reputation for pushing beyond the limits of traditional local television.

TV3 Medford later documented the program as a:

“long-running controversial late-night show.”

That description would become part of the station’s historical record.

Zapp TV

The Show

Broadcast during the final major era of analog cable-access television, Zapp TV operated years before the rise of YouTube, podcasts, livestreaming, and creator-driven internet media.

The program embraced:

  • uncensored live television
  • confrontational interviews
  • outsider-media energy
  • political discussion
  • offbeat humor
  • direct audience interaction
  • experimental production techniques

Unlike traditional broadcast television, public-access cable allowed independent personalities to create programming without network oversight or corporate gatekeeping. Zapp TV used that freedom fully, becoming part talk show, part political forum, and part underground late-night television experiment.

Its raw production style and highly personality-driven format reflected the broader culture of 1990s public-access broadcasting — a media environment where controversy, creativity, and local notoriety often intersected.

Boston Media Connections

One of the defining aspects of Zapp TV was its connection to recognizable Boston media figures and regional personalities.

Guests reportedly included:

  • Charles Laquidara
Legendary WBCN broadcaster and host of “The Big Mattress.”
  • Mark Parenteau
Influential Boston radio personality associated with WBCN and alternative music broadcasting.
  • Rex Trailer
Beloved New England television icon best known for Boomtown.
  • Joseph P. Kennedy II
Massachusetts political figure and member of the Kennedy family.

The range of guests — spanning alternative radio, mainstream television, and politics — suggests that Zapp TV occupied a unique place within the greater Boston media ecosystem rather than existing merely as obscure local-access programming.

Political Campaign

In 1997, Gary Zappelli expanded his public profile by running for Medford City Council.

Campaign advertisements used the slogan:

“It’s time to ZAP the City Council”

directly tying the campaign to the public recognition created through Zapp TV.

Zappelli appeared on the official Medford municipal ballot as:

Gary A. Zappelli

According to local accounts, he received approximately 1,500 votes, a significant total for an outsider candidate associated primarily with public-access television.

The campaign demonstrated that Zapp TV had evolved beyond cable entertainment into a recognizable force within the local political and cultural landscape.

Historical Context

During the 1990s, public-access television functioned as:

  • proto-social media
  • proto-podcasting
  • independent creator broadcasting
  • uncensored community television

Programs like Zapp TV gave local personalities direct access to audiences years before internet platforms democratized media production.

The show emerged during a unique transitional moment in media history:

  • before algorithmic platforms,
  • before influencer culture,
  • and before creator-driven broadcasting became mainstream.

In many ways, Zapp TV anticipated the style later associated with:

  • livestreaming,
  • independent podcasts,
  • shock-commentary programming,
  • and personality-based internet media.

Legacy

Although much public-access programming from the era disappeared without preservation, Zapp TV survives through:

  • historical references,
  • archival material,
  • YouTube uploads,
  • political memorabilia,
  • and documentation connected to TV3 Medford.

Today, the show stands as a surviving example of New England’s underground cable-access culture and the highly experimental spirit of independent broadcasting during the 1990s.

Gary Zappelli’s work on Zapp TV represents a distinctive chapter in regional media history — one that blurred the lines between entertainment, politics, controversy, and independent television during the final years before the internet transformed creator media forever.

Winter Storm Riley photos by Gary Zappelli

Is March the new February in New England ? March 2018 sure seems to be that way.  Winter Storm Riley bombed out off the New England coast and produced destructive impacts in the East March 1-4. Locals say they have not seen such waves in Revere MA. for many years. Coastal flooding and beach erosion occurred over multiple astronomical high tides, yielding the third-highest tide on record in Boston.

Gary Zappelli captured these stunning, powerful pictures.
